The Pitch
ARTHUR "ARTIE" PENHALIGON is a C-minus human. Charming on the surface, empty underneath. He works as a freelance consultant—the kind of person companies hire when they need someone who can be anyone for a week. He's good at it because he has no fixed self to get in the way. What nobody knows—including Artie, until the pilot—is that this isn't personality. It's architecture.
In the 1980s, a classified government program called GATE identified children with "porous neural architecture"—brains that could form temporary synaptic bridges with other people through prolonged synchronized biometrics. Proximity, shared rhythms, sustained contact. The GATE children can absorb the core traits of anyone they bridge with: creativity, analytical precision, physical courage, empathy.
The trait lasts seven days in the borrower. After seven days it evaporates. If the borrower doesn't return it before the window closes, the host stays Dimmed permanently.
Key Players
Artie Penhaligon
Secretly a trait addict. He borrows constantly—charm from a date, precision from a colleague, warmth from a friend—and returns just enough to keep people functional while skimming the best parts for himself. He's terrified of his own baseline: the bland, uncertain, deeply ordinary person underneath the collection of stolen qualities.
Malachi
Another GATE survivor who has abandoned all pretense of balance. Malachi is "pruning" humanity—stealing the best traits of world leaders, artists, scientists, and visionaries to build a composite god in his own mind.
Ruth
A woman immune to the Bridge because her identity is so rooted in self-sacrifice that she has no ego for Artie to latch onto—making her the only person he can truly love, and the only relationship he can't cheat.
Three-Season Arc
Season One: The Architecture of a Man
Artie discovers his abilities, learns the rules, becomes a fixer for the elite. A CEO needs confidence for a hostile takeover—Artie bridges with a decorated general and delivers it. A tech founder needs creativity—Artie borrows it from a painter and doesn't return it in time. The painter never paints again. Artie tells himself it was an accident.
Season Two: The Arms Race
Malachi emerges. The Dimmed start appearing in public—people who were extraordinary and are now just... there. Artie begins stacking multiple traits simultaneously and the voices start: fragments of the people he's borrowed from, echoing in his consciousness, demanding return.
Season Three: The Apotheosis
GATE's true purpose is revealed: the children weren't accidents. They were designed as the operating system for a failing humanity. Artie must decide: accept his role as "The Apex" of a new world—the ultimate composite, the best of everyone concentrated in one man—or use the Reverse Bridge on a global scale.
The Question
Is a person the sum of their qualities, or is there something underneath—something the Bridge can't touch—that makes them who they are?
Why It Matters in The Proxy
Elias wrote it for Leo.
The READMEFORLEO file explains: "For when the treatments get rough and you need somewhere good for your brain to go... and a song's not enough."
Leo reads it alone in his hotel room like scripture, writing margin notes addressed to a dead man. The Apex is not a product. It's a conversation between two friends that only one of them is still alive to have.
It exists outside the production, outside the studio, outside the system. Marcus delivers it to Caroline via FedEx in the final scene of The Proxy—on conditions Leo specified, at exactly the right moment.
